Appliance repair in Chatsworth: the garage refrigerator, the dust, and the dishwasher film

Chatsworth appliances fail on a pattern that is specific to this end of the Valley. Why does the garage refrigerator quit in August and come back in October?

Because it was never designed for the temperature it is being asked to work in. A standard household refrigerator is specified for an ambient range of roughly 55 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. A closed garage on a Chatsworth street in August spends the afternoon at or above the top of that band, and the compressor simply cannot reject heat into air that is already hot. The unit runs without stopping, the fresh food side drifts up to 45 or 50 degrees, and the owner reports it as a dying compressor. In October the same unit works perfectly again.

The free check is the condenser. Pull the base grille off the front, or the panel off the back on older units, and look at the coil and the fan blade. If the fins are packed with grey felt, the refrigerator is trying to dump heat through a blanket. Vacuum it, brush the fins in the direction they run, and clear the fan blade. On a garage unit in this area that should be done twice a year, not once every few years.

The second check costs nothing either. Confirm the door gasket is sealing by closing the door on a dollar bill and pulling. If the bill slides out with no drag, the gasket has taken a set and is pulling humid garage air in continuously. That shows up as frost on the freezer walls and a compressor that never rests.

There is a failure that goes the other direction and catches people in January. Many single-evaporator refrigerators use one thermostat in the fresh food compartment to control cooling for both compartments. When the garage drops below about 55 degrees, the fresh food side is already cold enough, the compressor never starts, and the freezer thaws quietly while the refrigerator section looks fine. That is not a fault. It is why manufacturers sell garage-ready models with a separate heater or a second sensor.

What the dust actually does to Chatsworth appliances

Fine dust off the hills and the open lots at the north end of 91311 does not stay outside. It gets into three places that matter.

Condenser fan motors. Dust builds on the blade unevenly, the blade goes out of balance, and the motor bearing wears. The early symptom is a rattle or a hum from the bottom rear of the refrigerator that changes pitch when the compressor starts. Caught at that stage it is a fan motor. Ignored, the sealed system runs hot for months and the repair becomes a much larger one.

Dryer vent runs. Lint plus dust makes a denser plug than lint alone. The symptom is not no heat, it is two cycles to dry one load, and a dryer that is hot to the touch on the top panel. Disconnect the transition hose at the wall and check it before assuming the heating element failed. A restricted vent also trips the thermal fuse on many models, and a thermal fuse that has been replaced twice without the vent being cleared will fail a third time.

Range hood filters and blower housings. Grease plus dust sets into a hard film that no dishwasher cycle will remove. Film on glassware and what actually causes it

Chatsworth is served by LADWP. Two complaints come from it and they need different fixes.

White film on everything, including the tub. That is scale. It does not wipe off with a finger and it builds evenly. The fix is not a repair. Run a cycle with citric acid based dishwasher cleaner, keep the rinse aid reservoir full, and set the rinse aid dial one step higher than the factory position. Households seeing film almost always run rinse aid too low.

Spots and grit on the bottom rack only. That is a wash performance problem, not water chemistry. Pull the filter assembly out of the sump, rinse it, and check the lower spray arm turns freely by hand. Then look at the holes in the arm against a light. Scale plugs the outer holes first, which is why the outer edge of the bottom rack is the part that comes out gritty.

If the tub still holds water at the end of a cycle after the filter is clean, stop cleaning and start diagnosing. Water in the bottom points at the drain path: the drain hose, the air gap, or the plug inside the garbage disposal inlet that gets left in place when a disposal is replaced. When a Chatsworth repair is not worth doing

We will say so on the phone where we can. The line we use is the age of the unit against the cost of the part.

A sealed system repair on a 14 year old side by side, meaning compressor, evaporator or a refrigerant leak, is rarely worth it on a mass market unit. The same repair on a built-in column with a 20 year design life is a different calculation entirely and usually worth doing. A control board on a 12 year old top load washer is generally not worth it. A drain pump on the same machine is.
