Viking range and refrigerator repair in the West Valley: ignition, simmer, convection and the warranty question

Viking ranges are built around a few named systems: SureSpark ignition, the VariSimmer setting, TruConvec convection and the Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler. Knowing what each one is supposed to do is most of the way to knowing what has gone wrong.

Viking is one of the premium brands Vladimir has hands-on repair experience with, and we work on Viking ranges, rangetops and refrigeration across the West Valley, including Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Encino and Woodland Hills. VSH Appliance Repair is an independent, family-owned company in Canoga Park, registered in California since 2015 and licensed under BHGS #49468. We are not a Viking authorized service agency, and Viking requires its own authorized service for warranty work, so if your unit is under warranty call Viking first. Outside that coverage, the price is agreed before we start.

SureSpark ignition: when clicking is normal

Viking describes it this way: "The exclusive SureSpark™ Ignition System ensures automatic ignition/re-ignition should the burners extinguish any time while cooking." In plain terms, the range watches for a flame that has gone out and fires the igniter again. A short burst of clicking after a draft or a boil-over is that system working.

What is not normal: clicking that continues with a steady flame on the burner, or clicking with no flame at all. Start with the cheap causes. A burner that is still wet from cleaning or a spill needs to dry completely, and a burner cap that is not seated flat changes where the flame meets the igniter. If the clicking continues once the burner is dry and the cap is seated, the igniter, its wiring or the spark module needs to be tested. If you smell gas, turn the burner off, leave the house and call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 from outside.

VariSimmer and the burner system

On the 5 Series, Viking says the ranges "are equipped with a Pro Sealed Burner System, VariSimmer™ Setting and SureSpark™ Ignition System to ensure perfect temperature control even at the most delicate settings." A burner that will not hold its lowest setting often traces back to the burner itself: blocked ports, a misaligned cap, or residue around the igniter. For the 7 Series burner heads, Viking's own support page gives a cleaning method: "Mix Bar Keepers Friend® and water to make a paste. Coat area to be cleaned and leave for 30 minutes. Scrub the burner head with the green 3M® pad."

TruConvec and the Gourmet-Glo broiler

Viking defines TruConvec as the convection system that "Uses only convection element in rear of oven and fan-forced air- no direct heat from top or bottom." That makes it a useful diagnostic split. If regular bake works but TruConvec heats slowly or unevenly, the rear convection element or the fan is the likely fault, because the rear element is the only heat source in that mode and the fan is what moves its heat. If both modes are off, the temperature sensor or the controls move up the list. Our guide to an oven that will not reach set temperature covers that sequence in general terms.

On gas models, Viking describes the "restaurant-quality Gourmet-Glo™ Infrared Broiler." A broiler that lights unevenly or not at all is a gas and ignition question, handled with the same care as a burner.

Viking refrigeration

Viking refrigerators carry their own systems. On a current built-in model page, Viking lists a "ProChill™ Temperature Management System with variable speed DC Overdrive™ compressor" and a Plasmacluster ion air purifier. Temperature complaints on these units follow the usual sequence: condenser cleanliness and airflow first, then door seals, then the fans and defrost system, and only then the sealed system. See our refrigerator repair page for how we work through it.

Before we come out

Send a photo of the model and serial tag, and tell us which series you have if you know it. Viking's product lines differ in burners, ignition and controls, and the tag lets us bring the right part on the first visit.

VSH Appliance Repair works on Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking, Thermador and Bosch kitchens across the West Valley. Questions we get

My Viking burner clicks by itself while it is lit. Is that a fault?

Not always. Viking says its SureSpark ignition system ensures automatic ignition and re-ignition should the burners go out while cooking, so the igniter can fire again if the flame is disturbed. Constant clicking with a steady flame, or clicking with no flame at all, is worth having diagnosed.

What is TruConvec on a Viking oven?

Viking describes TruConvec as its convection system that uses only the convection element in the rear of the oven with fan-forced air, and no direct heat from the top or bottom. If that mode heats poorly while bake works, the rear element or the fan is the first place to look.

My Viking is under warranty. Should I call you?

Call Viking first. Viking's warranty says warranty service must be performed by a Viking Range LLC authorized service agency or representative, and it does not apply to damage resulting from repair service by anyone else. VSH is an independent repair company, not a Viking authorized agency, and we work on units outside that coverage.
