F11 is a drain fault. The machine tried to pump out and the water did not leave fast enough. On Miele dishwashers the drain path has three stages: the triple filter in the floor of the tub, the drain pump under it, and the hose to the air gap or disposal connection.
The filter is the answer most of the time. Miele's triple filter does its job so well that everything ends up in it: olive pits, glass chips, wine bottle foil, the plastic tag off a bread bag. Twist it out, rinse it under the tap, check the pump chamber under it for debris, and run a rinse cycle. Miele documents the filter cleaning procedure in every manual and on its support site.
If the filter is clean and F11 persists, the usual suspects in cost order: a kinked or clogged drain hose, a blocked air gap on the counter, then the drain pump itself. Only the last one needs a technician and a part. The full drain sequence is on the dishwasher repair page.
F13 and the intake indicator are the mirror image of F11: water is not coming in fast enough. Before assuming the machine is broken, check the two things that are free.
First, the stopcock under the sink. It needs to be fully open, and after any plumbing work in the house it is often left half closed. Second, the inline filter where the hose meets the valve. The fine mesh on that filter collects mineral grit over the years. Shut the water, unscrew the hose, and look at the mesh. If it is speckled white or brown, rinse it and reconnect.
If both are clear, the fault moves to the water inlet valve or the flow sensor. Those are technician jobs, but they sit at the cheap end of Miele parts.
Miele's heating systems run precise temperature curves, and a scaled heater throws the curve off before it fails outright. On LADWP water, which the utility's own water quality report puts in the hard range for most of the Valley, scale builds on the heater and the temperature sensor over 3 to 5 years of daily use.
The early symptoms are subtle: cycles run 10 to 20 minutes longer, glasses come out with a haze, a washer's hot cycles read as lukewarm on the glass door. The machine often shows no code at all at this stage, which is why the complaint arrives as "it still runs but something is off."
The free fix is preventive: a citric acid descaling cycle every month or two, run empty and hot. Miele sells its own descaler, and generic citric acid works on the same chemistry. A machine that gets this from year one simply skips the whole failure mode.
Miele dishwashers and washers have a waterproof system: a float switch in the base pan that trips when water collects where it never should. When that alarm shows, F70 on many dishwasher models, or a waterproof message on washers, the machine has already found a leak inside itself and has parked in a protective state.
This is the one code where we tell people to do less, not more. Shut the stopcock, leave the machine off, and do not run another cycle to see if it clears. The float tripped because water is sitting in the pan, and every additional fill sends more water toward your floor. Finding the leak source, a hose clamp, a pump seal, a cracked sump, is a disassembly job, and running the machine in the meantime turns a seal replacement into a flooring claim.
Usually, and more often than almost any other brand. Miele states that it tests its major appliances to the equivalent of 20 years of use, per its own quality documentation, and in the field the machines back the claim up. Parts availability on 15 year old units is good, and the build quality means a repaired machine keeps working instead of presenting the next fault a month later.
The honest exception: physical damage to the tub or a sealed system failure late in life. There we will tell you the repair is not worth it, because this article is only useful if it stays honest.
