Refrigerator repair in the West San Fernando Valley: the seven failures we see most

Most refrigerators that stop cooling do not need a compressor. In our experience across the Valley, the usual suspects are dirty condenser coils, a failed evaporator fan, or a dead defrost component, and two of those three can be spotted at home before you spend anything. First: three checks that cost you nothing

  1. Settings and power. Confirm the unit has power and the thermostat was not bumped. The fresh food section should sit at or below 40 F, per the FDA's refrigerator guidance. A cheap fridge thermometer answers this in an hour
  2. Airflow inside. A packed fridge can block the vents that carry cold air from the freezer to the fresh food side. If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm and you can hear a fan, clear the vents first
  3. Condenser coils. On most units they are behind the base grille or on the back. If they are wearing a fur coat of dust, unplug the unit and vacuum them. The Department of Energy lists coil cleaning as basic maintenance, and in Valley summers it is the single most common reason a fridge "can't keep up"

If those three check out and the unit is still warm, the fault is usually one of the failures below.

The seven common failures, cheapest first

1. Door gasket

A torn or hardened gasket lets warm, humid air in. Symptoms: condensation on the door frame, frost buildup, longer run times. Close the door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out freely, the gasket is done. This is one of the cheapest repairs on the list.

2. Condenser fan motor

Sits next to the compressor and pushes air across the coils. When it fails, the compressor overheats and cycles off. Symptom: fridge warm, compressor area hot, clicking every few minutes.

3. Evaporator fan motor

Lives in the freezer and circulates cold air. Classic symptom: freezer cold, fridge warm, and either silence where a fan should be or a loud squeal from the freezer wall.

4. Defrost system: heater, thermostat or timer

Every frost-free unit melts frost off the evaporator several times a day. When the defrost heater or defrost thermostat fails, ice slowly buries the evaporator and airflow dies over one to two weeks. Symptom: unit gets gradually warmer, and a sheet of ice on the back wall of the freezer.

5. Thermistor or temperature sensor

Feeds the control board. A drifting thermistor makes the unit run too long or not enough. On many LG and Samsung models this shows up as erratic temperatures rather than a total failure.

6. Start relay and capacitor

The compressor tries to start, clicks, and gives up. A failed relay mimics a dead compressor at a fraction of the cost, which is why we test the relay before ever condemning a compressor.

7. Compressor and sealed system

The expensive one, and the one where honesty matters. If the compressor runs but the coils never get cold, the refrigerant circuit may have a leak or a restriction. Sealed system work requires recovery equipment and EPA Section 608 certification, and on an older mass-market unit the repair cost can approach replacement. We tell you that math before any work starts. On a built-in Sub-Zero or Thermador the calculation is different, because the unit itself is worth saving.

When repair beats replacement, and when it does not

A rough rule we give customers: if the unit is a standard freestanding model past 12 to 15 years and needs sealed system work, replacement usually wins. If it is a built-in, a panel-ready integrated unit, or under 10 years old with a fan, gasket, relay or defrost fault, repair wins clearly. If you do replace, do not send the old unit to a landfill: refrigerant must be recovered, and the EPA's Responsible Appliance Disposal program explains how proper disposal works.

Questions we get

My freezer works but the fridge is warm. Is that the compressor?

Almost never. That pattern points to airflow: evaporator fan, blocked vents or a frosted-over evaporator from a defrost failure. The compressor is clearly still making cold, because the freezer has it.

Is it worth repairing a 20-year-old refrigerator?

For a standard freestanding unit, usually only if the fault is minor, like a gasket or relay. For built-in units, yes, repair is usually worth it, because replacement involves cabinetry, not just the appliance.

Can you come out on Sunday?
