Thermador faults cluster in four places, and only one of them is expensive. What F34 and E005 actually point to, the checks that cost you nothing, and why the rating plate matters more than the model name on the door.

Four areas produce most of the calls we take in the West Valley: Star burner ignition on gas ranges and cooktops, the cooling fan and door lock circuit on wall ovens, which reports as F34, communication between the touch panel and the control board on newer units, which reports as E005, and drain faults on Sapphire dishwashers. Three of those four are moderate repairs. The one that costs real money is a control board, and the reason is lead time rather than labor. The spark is going somewhere other than the gas. Thermador's Star burner puts the flame ports on a star-shaped head, which spreads heat well and also gives spills more places to sit. Four causes, cheapest first.
A wet or fouled spark electrode. Boil-over leaves sugar and salt on the ceramic. The spark then tracks along the residue instead of jumping the gap. Turn the burner off, wipe the electrode dry with a paper towel, and wait. This costs nothing and fixes a large share of these calls.
Blocked flame ports. Gas reaches the head but not the gap where the spark is. Clear each port with a wooden toothpick or a straightened paper clip. Do not use a needle you might snap off inside the port, and do not enlarge the port.
A cracked electrode or a chafed igniter lead. You will often hear this before you see it, because the clicking becomes irregular or the neighboring burner starts clicking as well. This is a part, and it is a modest one.
The spark module. The module fires every electrode on the cooktop, so when it fails you usually lose ignition on several burners at once rather than one. That pattern is the giveaway, and it saves us from replacing a good electrode.
One thing that is not a fault: the ExtraLow setting cycles the burner on and off by design to hold a low simmer. Customers report it as a burner that keeps going out. It is doing what it was built to do.
The hard limit on this section: if you smell gas, this stops being a repair question. Leave the house, then call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 from outside, and read their natural gas leak guidance when you are safe. Do not flip switches on your way out.
F34 points at the top cooling fan air switch, the component that confirms air is actually moving through the oven cavity vent. When the switch cannot detect airflow, the control shuts the oven down to keep from cooking its own electronics. The same code also appears on door lock motor and lock circuit faults, which is why it shows up so often during or immediately after a self-clean cycle: that is the one time the door lock motor is doing real work and the cavity is at its hottest.
Two free checks before anyone comes out. Look at the vent trim above the door and confirm nothing is sitting against it, including a warming drawer stuffed full or a decorative panel added during a remodel. Then run the oven on bake and listen for the cooling fan within a couple of minutes. A silent fan with a hot cavity is a different repair from a running fan with a false switch reading, and knowing which one it is changes the part we bring.
What we ask of you in the meantime: stop using self-clean until the fault is closed. The code is a protection, and repeated self-clean cycles with a marginal airflow path are how a small switch replacement turns into a control board replacement.
E005 is a communication failure between the user interface and the electronic control board. It usually reads as an oven that lights up but will not accept input, or a display that shows temperatures that make no sense. Two causes account for most of them: a loose or heat-damaged wiring harness connector between the panel and the board, and a board that has been sitting above a heat source longer than it liked.
This one is not a homeowner repair, and the reason is worth stating. Reseating a harness on a built-in oven means pulling the unit out of a cabinet run, and on a panel-ready installation that means handling a door and a trim kit that cost more than the board. Where we spend our time is deciding whether the fault is the harness, the panel or the board, because those three have very different lead times through the BSH parts channel. Guessing wrong on a Thermador board is a two-week delay, not a two-hour one.
These are two separate complaints and only one of them is a fault.
Water in the bottom after a cycle. Start with the filter assembly at the base of the tub. Twist it out, rinse it, and check the sump underneath for a shard of glass or a fruit sticker sitting on the drain port. Then check the drain hose where it meets the disposal or air gap under the sink, because a plugged disposal inlet stops a perfectly healthy drain pump. If the filter and the hose are clear and the pump hums without moving water, the impeller or the check valve is the repair. See dishwasher repair for the full sequence.
Plastic still wet at the end. Thermador dishwashers dry by condensation rather than by a heating element, which is quieter and uses less energy, and which also means plastic stays damp when rinse aid runs low. Fill the rinse aid reservoir and set it a step higher before you call anyone. If glass and ceramics are also coming out wet, then we look at the vent flap and the fan.
Thermador parts are ordered against the E-Nr on the rating plate. On wall ovens the plate is on the frame behind the door, on ranges it is behind the kick panel or under the cooktop surface, and on refrigeration columns it is inside the fresh food compartment along the upper left wall. Thermador's own owner manual search takes the same number. A photo of that plate sent before the visit is the single biggest thing that turns a two-visit repair into one.

Turn the burner off, let the electrode dry, clear the burner ports with a wooden toothpick, and try again. If you smell gas at any point, stop, leave the house, and call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 from outside.
F34 points to the cooling fan air switch or the door lock circuit, and it shows up most often during or right after a self-clean cycle. Check that the top vent trim is not blocked and that you can hear the cooling fan. Do not run self-clean again until the fault is found, because the code exists to stop the oven from overheating its own control board.
